Don't turn up the brightness!! Part of the pull of this game is how good and scary it is in the dark. You're not using your flashlight.
MxR those creatures run/cower away from light so charge your flashlight with electricity by using the dynamo (the thing on the f-key by pressing fire repeatedly when you have it in front of you) then aim your light at the creatures until they start cowering and you can easily get a head shot (one shot kill) or melee them to death this saves ammo. there is also a compass and objectives on the clipboard with a lighter for when you need a little bit of light and don't have the time to charge your flashlight or need to burn webbing. Maybe this will help you get further. Ps. keep an eye out for when you use your gas mask because it consumes filters you have to change manually (each filter is about 3 min worth of clean air) and you can also wipe your gas mask clean when it gets dirty with dirt/blood.
