The "rivers" under the sea actually exist in real sea, it also called 'no life zone' or 'salt lake under sea', it is high salt water with really high density which looks like a 'lake' in the see, the "lake" are very toxic, fish will instant died after a single 'breath' in it.

its not gasses in the lost river, its most likely a very sulfur enriched water
MxR when it comes to Thick Clyde being attacked you can reduce it by going into a slower movement mode which causes it to make less noise and in an area where even the slowest movement mode is making too much noise you can use Silent Running which removes all the noise at the cost of making you super slow (Which is useful because the big fish can actually wreck Thick Clyde's shit)
Why create a stasis rifle if you're not going to shoot the attacking marine animals..?
