The winterhold shelter is an ancient hideout of the college of winterhold, it was built during a time when the college was host to several masters of necromancy in case of necromancy spells gone wrong (zombie apocalypse style) and so the gate will only allow the living to pass. Over the years the shelter was forgotten as it never saw any use and by now it is only mentioned in the oldest most obscure books of the college, which over the years have been lost by thieves and mages who died on their travels. Ayana and her khajit friends parents found the book which tells of the shelters location and settled there, despite being of different race they came to an agreement to share the shelter because they found the book together. They decided to start using it as shelter for passing khajit caravans. Over the years, the original settlers died of age and or sickness and because the dead can't pass through the gates, they had no other choice but to bury the dead withing the shelter.
Both Ayana and all the current khajit living in the shelter where born there and grew up together.
If anyone thinks they can improve my story of the shelters lore then be my guest. I'm far from an expert story teller.
